I went on a diving trip with the diving school at the Coral Reef Hotel, located on the west coast. We completed two boat dives down to about 14 metres. Due to a storm coming in the visibility was not great, at times I could see up to 15 metres but it was pretty murky, which you’ll noticed from the photos below.
I really struggle equalising my ears so it can take me a while to descend. I told my instructor and he was right next to me the whole way until I was feeling comfortable. On my descend I got stung on my leg (I only had a short wetsuit on as the water was pretty warm), I never saw a jellyfish though so I think it was sea lice, which is microscopic larvae of jellyfish.
On the dives I saw turtles, a variety of fish and hard corals, we also saw so many flying fish on our way back to shore! I dived with my instructor and he’s friend. The dive mainly involved me watching them capture lion fish (which cause damage to coral reefs, mangroves and other sea animals – something I didn’t know at the time!). It was a pretty cool experience! I managed to catch some footage too, see below :).
You’ll also notice from a lot of my diving photos and footage that the coral is mostly green or dark looking in colour. The reason for this is due to lack of light on the coral. If you manage to read my next blog post, I had the opportunity to dive with a professional underwater photographer, who used underwater lamps and coloured filters for the lens.
